Born and raised in Qingdao and Hong Kong respectively, Jun &amp; Bonnie both grew up in coastal cities, and neither realised the fundamental role the sea played in their lives until moving to London. No longer in reachable distance, the sea instead became part of the artists’ imaginations: they 'see' the sea when they are near the River Thames by knowing that its water links to the ocean. In this project, the duo uses bilingual words and expressions to compose a 'landscape'. Together with prints and books, the installation explores the experience of physical and mental relocation. The Sea Project was commissioned by the Central Saint Martins, London and was part of its MA Culture, Criticism and Curation final show. It was first exhibited in We [ breathe ] in the space between which took place at the MIR Project Space (former Rotherhithe Police Station) in London in Nov 2019. The photograph was taken with black and white film; while the rainbow was obtained during the scanning process when the camera bar and light went through the curvy negative, the histogram was then adjusted to fully reveal the ‘rainbow’.
